Tips To Maintaining Your Table Tennis Equipment

Tips to Maintaining Your Table Tennis Equipment

After an exhausting table tennis game, it can be tempting to leave your table tennis equipment in a bag untouched until the next game. However, taking the time to clean your rackets and rubbers can go a long way toward lengthening the lifespan of your equipment.

Table tennis equipment requires proper care and maintenance to keep it working properly. Proper care includes cleaning regularly, keeping surfaces clean and dry, and storing equipment correctly. Cleaning equipment prevents dust buildup that could affect performance, and keeping equipment clean and free of debris keeps it operating efficiently.

Why keep your rackets and rubbers clean?

When you have just replaced your rubbers, they can feel ‘tacky.’ This means you can impart a good level of spin on the ball, delivering shots to your opponent that are challenging. However, over time, as dust, sweat, and grime accumulate on your racket, it reduces the amount of friction of your rubber and can result in less effective shots. By consistently cleaning your table tennis, you can keep your racket free of dust and maintain its performance.

How to clean your table tennis equipment?

1. Clean frequently

The frequency of cleaning depends on the type of table tennis equipment. A ball machine may require only light cleaning once per year or two, whereas rackets and paddles may need to be cleaned more frequently. Regardless of the type of equipment, it’s best to clean everything thoroughly at least once per month.

2. Use the right cleaning materials

It’s important that you take care to use the right type of cleaning materials, as using the incorrect cleaning supplies can damage your racket. The easiest and best way is to use water. Simply dampen a soft cloth, sponge, or micro-fibre cloth with lukewarm water and gently wipe the surface of the rubber in circular motions. Air dry the bat immediately after rinsing and store the bat in a cool, dark area.

Alternatively, you can purchase a dedicated cleaning spray bat cleaner. These cleansers help to remove a buildup of dirt, sweat oil, or grease and are useful in getting rid of harder-to-remove stains and smudges. Sin Ten’s Donic Combi Cleaner is an effective rubber cleaner that comes in a portable 100ml bottle and with a foam applicator. Or you can also try the Yasaka Kiyomizu-San rubber cleaner that works for both pimple-in and pimple-out rubbers.

3. Avoid abrasive cleaning methods

Ensure that the sponge you are using isn’t overly abrasive, as this can strip the rubber off its material, making it lose its tackiness. Also avoid using excessive water or soaking the bat in water, as the water can seep into the rubber and it will lose its effectiveness. When wiping down your racket, take care not to be aggressive and apply too much pressure. When drying your racket, also avoid using excessive heat or placing it under direct sunlight.

4. Store your table tennis accessories properly

The best way to store your table tennis equipment is in a clean, dry area away from direct sunlight. A closet or room dedicated solely to storing your equipment is ideal. Make sure that you keep the items organised and easy to access.

If you haven’t been able to find any space to put everything away yet, consider buying some clear plastic bins to store your gear in. These containers can be placed inside a larger bin or cabinet to protect the smaller pieces of equipment from dust and dirt. Keep your equipment stored in a cool, dark location, and avoid placing it in areas that may contain excessive heat.
